As a marketing consultant, I understand the importance of professional photos in your branding. I recently rebranded my marketing business and decided the time was right for a personal branding photoshoot. My DIY selfies were no longer adequate in exhibiting my skills, my professionalism, and my care for my business. So after researching brand photographers in Swadlincote, I was excited to catch up with an old school friend Kera Robson, who with 16 years of photography experience, had mastered the art of story-telling through photography! Here’s a sneak peek behind the scenes so you know what to expect if you’re planning your own personal branding photoshoot…

The Booking Process

After chatting with my photographer, it became obvious that her expertise extended beyond simply capturing aesthetically pleasing images. She possessed a profound understanding of how photography serves as a fundamental element in establishing brand identity, building trust, maintaining consistency, and boosting engagement on social media platforms.

I was excited to work with a fellow small-business owner who understood me, my business and my goals for my professional photography.

Deciding what to wear for the branding photoshoot

This was definitely one of the toughest parts for me. It felt like such a big decision!
With hours spent scrolling instagram for ‘clothing ideas’ and ‘what to wear for your personal brand photography shoot’, I put social media away and trusted my own instinct.

Outfit Ideas for a branding photoshoot:

I chose the following outfits;

My very smartest work outfit (think LinkedIn & client proposal)

Something casual and cosy the kind of thing I would wear for working at home. I chose jeans, a plain white T shirt and trainers.

Something ‘worky’ that still shows personality – I chose black leather trousers, a white blouse, pink blazer and red boots.

Lastly, I’m quite feminine and like to think I’m quite friendly and fun so a pretty, floaty dress in one of my brand colours was picked for my final outfit.

My advice would be ‘don’t overthink it, go easy on the patterns and wear what you know makes you look and feel good’.

The Day of the shoot.

Kera had booked Skye Studios in Leicester for our branding photoshoot as she felt this gave us plenty of choice for capturing shots in different styles.

Here’s a little peek at Skye Studios:

While I changed into my first outfit, Kera got to work setting up her camera and equipment and staging the sets as she was imagining the shots.

It’s photo time!

In my first, comfy, casual look, makeup applied to the best of my ability and engaged in a constant battle to add some oomph to my hair, I took my place for the shoot. Kera immediately put me at ease. Amidst our chatter and giggles, she soon brushed off any lingering nerves and insecurities. Actually, with all the supportive ‘oh that’s beautiful, gorgeous, you’re a natural’ that Kera was throwing around, I actually started wondering if Vogue was accepting cover applications 😉

With her expert guidance, she showed me the ropes, helping me find the perfect poses and encouraging me to let loose and enjoy the shoot. Kera’s creativity was infectious (and being 9 months pregnant didn’t hold her back from crawling around on the floor to find the right angle!).

What’s more, she was an awesome collaborator, embracing my suggestions and weaving them seamlessly into the entire process. She had already planned lots of photos with space in mind for content, knowing I’d want to add text to some of the images.

How long does a branding photoshoot last?

We had the studio for 2 hours but were done after an hour and a half. Kera did suggest that the fantastic natural light at the studio contributed towards a prompt finish as it shortened the set-up time.

What props did I take with me for my branding photoshoot?

As my business is marketing and my services are devised on my own knowledge and skills, I chose to keep it simple. Just me, my laptop, phone and a notebook (as I use those daily for work).

However, I’d recommend taking items with you that show what you’re all about. If you’re work is more location based, you may choose a location branding shoot so that your photographer can capture you on-the-job. For example, a fitness instructor might want photographs while using gym equipment, a hairdresser, styling hair in a salon etc.
There was one prop I did forget to take – my favourite mug! I’ve always got a cup of tea in my hand when I’m working so absolutely should have taken this along with me!

How long does it take to get your photos back after a branding photoshoot?

I was very lucky to book in at a time when my photographer was just starting maternity leave so there was an impressively fast turnaround. Kera advises she normally has your carefully selected and edited photo gallery to you within 3 weeks.

With 1380 photos to organise, sift and edit, it’s easy to understand this is not a process that can be rushed!

My tips for your own personal branding photoshoot

  • Choose the Perfect Photographer: Chat with your photographer beforehand. Ensure they grasp the significance of branding and are confident in showcasing your expertise, professionalism, style, and brand tone through their photography.
  • Location is Key: Just as discussed above, choose a location that aligns with your business and brand. While a studio setting might suit one, a location shoot could better highlight your business’s unique value proposition. Consider where best showcases your business and the value it offers.
  • Dress to Impress Yourself: Select outfits that not only make you look good but also make you feel good. Embrace your personality – personal branding photoshoots are not limited to black trousers and white shirts. They offer a closer look at you and your business, so let your true self shine!
  • Have fun!: If you’re feeling camera-shy, remember you’re not alone. It’s natural to have insecurities, but trust in your photographer’s expertise and give yourself a pep talk. I had a little talk to myself. I reminded myself that my brand is fun and approachable and I wanted that to shine through in my photography.
Relax, enjoy the process, and let your authentic self take centre stage – the results will reflect your confidence and positivity !

My final professional branding photos!

I couldn’t be happier with my new photographs! I’m already in the midst of planning content that beautifully showcases my cohesive branding. Though I’ve only had them for a short while, they’ve already had a significant impact on my confidence in my brand and services. These images affirm my dedication to my work, demonstrate my passion, and convey a friendly and approachable demeanour (encouraging you to reach out If you’re seeking marketing support for your small business in Swadlincote or South Derbyshire 😉 )
