These small business owners not only offer you the chance to peruse some real treasures, but they also club together to plan events, craft fairs and family fun on the high street – all done with a friendly smile.

Over the years, we have seen a shift in people striving to shop locally and support their local, independent businesses. This is now more important than ever! Whilst the huge millionaire, big-name stores can easily absorb the extra production costs caused by the cost of living crisis, small businesses will struggle. Furthermore, most small business owners I have spoken to are NOT passing on those extra costs to their customers for fear of out-pricing their target audience. Upping prices is a last-ditch attempt before doors are permanently closed. With every shop that closes, someone’s dream is shattered. We need to change our shopping habits. Whilst placing an order online and getting a parcel to your door the next day is highly convenient, the lack of experience is rather dull. Why not go and look around, touch and hold items, talk to someone about how they were made, and understand their history. Choose a gift for someone because you held it in your hands and knew they’d love it, not because the internet showed you a mass-produced item had a small percentage off.

If that’s not enough, if you happen to pop into Swadlincote town on a Tuesday, Friday or Saturday, you will also find the market sellers ranging from fresh fruit and veg (who happen to be the happiest folk you’ll ever meet) to rugs, clothing, sweets, homemade curry and tons more.
